Esterházy Winery, located in Trausdorf near Eisenstadt, Austria, is one of the country’s oldest and most innovative wine estates. The Esterházy family’s winegrowing tradition dates back to the 17th century, with formal cellar records from 1758. Historically, the princely family, founded by Emperor Leopold I in 1687, shaped the viticultural landscape of Burgenland and introduced Burgundy grape varieties to the region. Today, the estate cultivates around 90 hectares of vineyards in the Leithaberg DAC, a terroir of mica schist and marine limestone influenced by the nearby Lake Neusiedl’s moderating climate.
The winery’s portfolio features both red and white varietals, with Blaufränkisch, Pinot Noir, Zweigelt, and Merlot dominating, complemented by Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Welschriesling, and Sauvignon Blanc. Since 2019, Esterházy has practiced organic farming, achieving full certification in 2023, and has become Europe’s first B-Corp certified winery, underscoring its commitment to environmental and social responsibility. The winery employs gravity-fed vinification and non-irrigated cultivation to preserve fruit purity and terroir expression. Combining centuries-old heritage with cutting-edge sustainability, Esterházy produces elegant, mineral-driven wines that reflect the unique character of Burgenland and its diverse microclimates.
