Elvio Cogno Winery, located in the Langhe region of Piedmont near Novello, is renowned for its traditional yet innovative approach to winemaking. Founded in 1964 when Elvio Cogno purchased the Ravera vineyard, the estate quickly became associated with quality Nebbiolo grapes, the foundation of prestigious Barolo wines. Elvio Cogno focused on low-yield cultivation and meticulous winemaking methods to ensure outstanding wine quality. In the late 1980s, his daughter Nadia and her husband Valter Fissore joined the winery, bringing fresh perspectives that enhanced its reputation.
The estate owns about fifteen hectares in Novello, including much of the famed Ravera cru, known for producing elegant, textured wines with remarkable aging potential. Elvio Cogno Winery was among the first to label wines by vineyard (Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva), highlighting terroir expression. Valter Fissore, the winemaker, balances scientific knowledge with sensory evaluation, prioritizing grape character and terroir integrity. The winery also revived the Nascetta grape, an indigenous white varietal, expanding its portfolio.
Elvio Cogno wines are characterized by elegance, balance, and a strong sense of place, making them highly respected within the Barolo DOCG framework. The family’s commitment to tradition alongside minimal intervention winemaking preserves the authentic flavors and texture unique to their prestigious vineyards.
